ESPADA Y SANTACRUZ STUDIO is a creation and management of interactive and visual projects collective based in Madrid since 2008. Their objective is the development of artistic practices associated with new technologies.
Bosch Art Game
DEMONS’ REVENGE is a multi-player installation based game, which mixes projection-mapping techniques with “traditional” wall painting.
The installation is based on the integration of the physical space with the virtual one. The game is deployed in a physical environment; inspired by Jheronimus Bosch’s paintings. The virtual elements of the game interact with the real space creating a exceptional illusion.
Commonly projection mapping is based on pre-rendered images integrated with real architecture. With this game, we take it a step further by using 3D real-time interaction.
The game consist of a large-scale mural representing the fantastic world of Bosch’s paintings. The mural is mixed with a real-time projection adapted to the represented world. Several players interact with the space following the logic of an old-fashioned arcade game.
Paola Antonelli, talking about the acquisition of videogames by MOMA, writes about of their most important characteristics “The space in which the game exists and evolves is an architecture that is planned, designed, and constructed according to a precise program, sometimes pushing technology to its limits in order to create brand new degrees of expressive and spatial freedom. […] Unlike physical constructs, however, video games can defy spatial logic and gravity, and provide brand new experiences.”
With the on-going project, Mixed Reality games, we’ve studied classical videogames and the way they reinvented the configuration of the space. With a limited amount of resources they achieved to created fully functional worlds in which users could navigate and have incredible immersive experiences.
The game will be developed by espadaysantacruz studio:
