Bosch Art Game

CAVE! CAVE! DEUS VIDET! – A visual novel about solitude, temptations and interpretations of the art of Jheronimus Bosch

CAVE! CAVE! DEUS VIDET! is an interactive visual novel made with the open source engine Ren’Py and inspired by “The Temptation of Saint Anthony” triptych by Jheronimus Bosch.
It is the story of a young visitor of the National Museum in Lisbon, Portugal – where the painting is currently located – who meets a strange man that seems to know many things, probably too many things, about the mysteries of this painting.
The game will lead the player into a magical trip through the possible interpretations of the triptych, conducted through first-person interrogations of its nightmarish inhabitants. Heresy, alchemy, Tarots, ergotism, occultism: will the protagonist’s ride on this conspiracy rollercoaster eventually bring him to solve the core of Bosch’s enigma? Maybe the key of this quest for truth rests in the sands of the Egyptian desert, where Saint Anthony himself was confronted by the ultimate temptation: the solitude of man.
Outcasts of the world, unite: the only way out is through our own obsessions!

Why a game about interpretations?
The interpretation of art is a fascinating discipline, yet it is often confined to academic texts and disputes between scholars. Not so pop indeed.
But despite their questionable truthfulness, fictional works such as “The Da Vinci Code” have already proven that the interpretation of art – especially of the most conflictual and mysterious one – can be an engaging driver for storytelling. Very pop indeed.
Few artists today are still as conflictual and mysterious as Jheronimus Bosch.
So: what if the diverse interpretations of the art of Bosch were the subject of an über-pop fictional work like… you know, a videogame?
More specifically: what if a player’s interaction with a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style visual novel was mainly based on picking out, between different interpretations of a piece of art, the one he/she wants to believe in the most?
Is a Choose-Your-Own-Meaning-style Bosch art game possible?
